Several things could be the problem:

1) Insufficient watering from a broken or clogged sprinkler; 2) Lack of fertilizer or excessive fertilizer (which could have burned the lawn) 3) Disease or animals.

If after a month of thorough watering and proper fertilizing you don't see any signs of life, you may have have to dig out the damaged area and replant with sod or seed. To be sure you don't have a disease that's spreading, take a clump now to your local nursery for professional evaluation.
