Styrofoam Ceiling Beams

I recently bought a house which has a vaulted ceiling in the living room area. Around the perimeter and in several rows along the ceiling the previous owner glued styrofoam blocks that are made to resemble exposed beams. I have removed the beams and all that is left now is the glue that appears to be an all purpose type adhesive that you find in caulk tubes.

Does anyone have a suugestion to easily and quickly remove this glue from the sheetrock? My intention is to repaint the ceiling.
