Installing a new thermostat

I would like to replace the thermostat in my home. I have already purchased a Honeywell unit. I have central HVAC, the thermostat is electronically linked to the unit in the basement. How can I do this correctly, with out electrocuting myself. The directions enclosed, and on the Honeywell website were like trying to decipher the Magna Carta...I don't have that kind of time to devote to reading instructions.

I also have a central Vac outlet that needs replacing. Again, I've purchased the neccessary hardware/faceplate to do this, yet would prefer to stay out of the local ER.

Please advise. I'm told these are simple project I do not need an electrician for.
