First, you should always try to slope your soil away from the house, so water runoff from rain will be less likely to permeate the foundation. Currently, it sounds like you've created a trap for the water and it has no place to go but down the side of the basement wall.

This takes a moment to download, so be patient!  Our readers find this to be a very valuable study on proper drainage techniques. In worst case, you may need to install a perimeter drainage system for your basement. However, by following some common-sense precautions, you should be able to remedy your situation if you can slope the ground away from the foundation.  A 2% grade is recommended.
