Bathtub fixtures

My bathtub needs new fixtures, but the bathtub looks like it is built into
the wall and there is no way to get to the fixtures. Who would do something so
silly? Did they think the fixtures would last forever? How do I get to the
fixtures without tearing the wall out from behind it which leads to the kitchen?
