I have a very similar problem. I have about 4 largish areas ( 50-100sf) that retain standing water for several days. I also have clay soil. I was considering installing french drains as a means of letting the water get into the ground. I thought diggig a pit (lined with a permeable membrane) filling it with rock, enclosing with membrane and topping with topsoil and grass. I feel this will allow the water to seep into the ground and eventually find its way into the soil. I'm not looking to install catch basins and pumps. Am I way off base?

Thank you,

John
