I-beam Design Assumptions:

Beam Span: 19 feet
Unsupported lateral span: 19 feet
Dead load deflection: length/240
Point load: 600 lbs at center

BeamChek computes the following minimum choice:

Wide Flange Steel I-Beam Type A36 W5x 19 where 5" is the breadth, and the depth is 5-1/8". The "19" refers to the weight per foot. So, this beam would weigh close to 400 pounds in your case. Shear computes to 2% and actual critical load is 20%. Be sure to properly anchor this beam on both ends. The last thing you want is this hunk of metal (and your engine) to come crashing down!

Please note that Builders Websource is NOT a structural engineering service. The above information is for illustrative purposes only and may not apply to your exact conditions. Always consult a licensed engineer to ensure occupant safety and proper flange connection details.
