There is not enough information in your post to compute the beam size. We would need to know exactly how and where the roof load is transferred to the beam, as well as the total tributary load on the beam (including the width and length of the roof - specify if the width is with the slope or without the slope accounted for). Furthermore, we would need to know the roofing material (shingles, slate, tile, etc.)...as well as any special wind or snow loads for your region.

Once we know the dead loads, we can better determine the size of beam required to support this roof.

Also, a drawing would really help, showing the structure, the roof orientation and the proposed location of the beam and other supports from the roof. You can fax it to 650-299-0668.

Once we get this, we can update this post to show a recommended beam size. Please include any contact information in case we have a question.
