Recessed Carpet

I have a landlord that is too cheap to replace a frayed carpet. The carpet has unraveled about 2 inches from a door join. As a result the rusty tacks meant to hold down the carpet are exposed.

I have tried to pull the carpet to the join, but there isn't enough slack. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? I'm not looking for a perfect job, it's just an apartment, but I'd rather not just throw a rug over it :). Is there something I could use to patch it?

Any feedback would be appreciated.
