I am adding a marble surround and wood mantel to a pre-existing, metal, zero clearance fireplace that is set into a sheet rock wall. The marble is primarily decorative and consists of 4 pieces (base, 2 legs and a top piece. The marble will be mounted on sheet rock, flush with the built-in firebox and will extend approximately 2" onto the surrounding metal.

Question: What kind of adhesive can be used to mount the marble on sheet rock and metal. Various trades people have offered different suggestions - PL400, Liquid Nails, Quickset or an adhesive specifically for use with marble or granite. Those suggesting PL400 or Liquid Nails have have indicated that the usual marble adhesive or Quickset will not adhere to metal and that Quickset can not be used on bare sheetrock.

I would appreciate any help/suggestions.

Thanks,
