Replace internal load-bearing wall with header

I'd like to remove 12' of an internal load-bearing wall in my basement (basement is about 30' X 60') and replace with the necessary header. The wall runs the length of the basement (about 60') and is the only internal wall under the the main floor of the house. I understand that there are tons ;-) of load questions, etc. etc. But is there no rule of thumb regarding replacing an existing wall? In other words, a 12' length of 2"X4" wood framed wall on 16" centers can support X amount of load... what type/size header can replace this support. Maybe I'm simplifying it too much and I'll certainly consult with someone local, just thought I'd check here. Thanks for the help!
