Stabledge by Norbord is a moisture-resistant formulation of OSB (oriented strandboard). It is suitable for flooring and sheathing applications, particularly if the construction site is exposed to rain or moisture during the construction process.

OSB and plywood have similar strength properties and can generally be used interchangeably. Since OSB is an engineered product, it is generally more consistent than plywood.

However, OSB is known to swell at edges when exposed to rain or moisture. This can cause permanent deformation of the edges, which can show through roofs or flooring surfaces. As a result of this problem, some trade associations specifically prohibit the use of OSB in situations where the "edge" problem could damage decorative surfaces, including ceramic tile and certain roofing materials.

The Stabledge product by Norbord is a proprietary formulation that provides an extra measure of edge protection, making it a superior product to traditional OSB. Since this is a new product, there is no track record of performance, other than tests run by the manufacturer.

An excellent article comparing Plywood to OSB is available from the University of Massachusetts website at:

http://www.umass.edu/bmatwt/osb.html

In addition, a promotional article on Norbord's Stabledge product is available as a PDF download at:

http://www.norbord.com/english/dialogue/dialogue_sum_01_e/r&d_sum_01.pdf

You will need the free Adobe Acrobat reader (available from http://www.adobe.com) to read the second document.

The bottom line is, we would not normally recommend OSB for flooring or sheathing situations exposed to excessive moisture. However, Norbord's new product shows promise and is on the leading edge of the next-generation of OSB engineered wood products. The APA-rated Sturd-i-Floor product you mentioned earlier is also an excellent product specifically designed for subfloor applications. We used the 1-1/8" size on our home with excellent results and a very stiff floor, ideal for tile and other heavy surfaces.
