While some hairline cracks are to be expected in a concrete slab, your situation sounds more severe. Cracking after just 2 days of curing is unusual. Was the concrete poured in unusually warm weather? Normally, the concrete should be misted or covered with a tarp to control the hydration process. The cracking could be due to improper mixture of the cement, settling, insufficient steel reinforcement, or other factor such as poor compaction or expansive soils. We would urge you to consult with both the city inspector, as well as an independent civil or geotechnical engineer who can evaluate the soil and foundation conditions first hand and make a recommendation. You are wise to be weary of a foundation that already shows a substantial amount of cracking after just two days of curing. While it may turn out to be only hairline cracks with no structural impairment, the foundation is the most important part of your home and you want to be sure you're not buying into a future nightmare.
