As a water softener generates significant water discharge over time, it is recommended to tie the discharge line into a sewer line with p-trap, a sink drain, a floor drain, washing machine drain, or a sump. Always check with all local plumbing codes to ensure proper installation in your area. An air gap is almost always required between the discharge line and the main drain line to prevent accidental siphoning of sewage back into the water supply. Typically, a 1/2" drain line can not be run over 50 feet without increasing drain line to 3/4". Always check with the installation instructions for your specific water softener to determine the permissible methods and recommendations for proper drainage. Builders Websource.
