Your beam should only be sized by a licensed structural engineer. Removing a 21-foot span of exterior load-bearing wall is a significant undertaking, especially with a 2nd story above. You'll need to know exactly how the loads impart on the span, including live and dead loads, snow, wind and seismic loads, as well as any other point or tributary loads from the roof. Only an on-site physical evaluation of your home will reveal this. However, assuming this is a clear span with no intermediate supports, you will need either a glulam or steel beam. The foundation must also be investigated to ensure that the additional concentrated loads at the ends of the beam are properly distributed to the bearing soil. Builders Websource
