Replacing ceiling beams

I want to convert my 70 year old garage to a home office. Unfortunately, the wood beams are so low that I will only have a 7 foot ceiling. Raising the roof is not an option under city codes. Someone mentioned that it might be possible to replace the wood beams with cable, thereby staying within the current outer structure. Can this be done, or do you have another suggestion? Thanks.
