Anytime you plan to remove a portion of a load-bearing wall, you should have a licensed structural engineer examine the actual on-site conditions and run specific load calculations that are specific to your conditions. Generally, whenever you remove a load-bearing wall, you must provide some type of alternative support, such as a wood or steel beam, possibly coupled with interim posts or supports (depending on load and span). In addition, you may need to make some foundation reinforcements if the shift of the load is significant. Only this can be determined by an engineer. Builders Websource.
