Installing a new door in place of an existing window is not too difficult if the width of the existing window rough opening is equal to or greater than the rough opening required for the door. If the window is smaller, this requires that you replace the header, which is a bigger task. Generally, an exterior door is 36" wide, making the rough opening around 38" or so. If you're not familiar with basic carpentry and framing techniques, we urge you to hire a licensed contractor to do the job for you. Structural factors, as well as waterproofing considerations of your exterior finish are essential elements of a successful conversion. Builders Websource.
