We recommend placing a thin 1/4" layer of hardibacker or wonderboard over your fireplace facing, securing it with latex-modified thinset mortar and concrete screws. The sides can be finished off with quarter rounds or cut pieces. Follow all manufacturer's instructions for proper installation. These products are available at the Home Depot.
