I'm in the process of building a free-standing deck and need some help. The deck will be 21 feet long, and 16 feet wide. I have set 6 rows of 4x4 posts, doubled 2x8x16 beams bolted to the sides of the posts run perpendicular to the back wall of the house. Hopefully this drawing will post correctly... (|*| = a post with beam to sides) House Wall --------------------------------- |*| |*| |*| |*| |*| |*| |*| |*| |*| |*| |*| |*| |*| |*| |*| |*| --Steps-- The plans call for joists to hang level with the beams, parallel to the house wall. Even though the joists are hanging inbetween the beams, do I need a rim joist on the house wall side (not attached to the house), connecting the beam ends? If so, how should this be attached? Also, the grade goes from 6" to 4.5' - should I use diagonal bracing, or some form of bracing on the end where it exceeds 2 feet above grade? Thanks for any ideas/suggestions, Chris Silver Spring, Maryland
