Reinforcing ceiling when removing beams

I opened up my upstairs 2 bedrooms to combine them into a master suite. There was 1 closet in between the 2 rooms that I stripped down, removed the plaster & lath & ultimately knocked out the beams to open the space up. Now that I removed the beams, the framework that the sheetrock is resting on is not being supported by anything. What is the best way to reinforce these couple of beams and preventing then from ripping through the sheetrock, but making it flush enough against the existing ceiling? The attic is above and this house is an old colonial style if it matters. Thanks in advance for your help!!
