crawlspace drainage and filter fabric

I got water in our crawlspace this spring. I plan to dig a trench around the perimeter and install a sump pump. The trench will be around 12"x8"x8". The soil I have is both clay and very fine particle (may be silt). Someone suggested me to lay a filter fabric around the trench before I backfill with stone and perforated pipe. I got two rolls (3'x100') of filter fabric from a retailer. They have a shining material on one side and a thin fabric on the other side. (Would these be what people called Silt Fence?) I am wondering if these are the right materials I should use to prevent undermining the foundation footing and still allow water to be collect in pipe. My other concern is whether the fabric will be clogged with soil and fail to provide necessary filteration function in future. I would be very much appreciate if you would be kind enough to answer my silly question.
