Installing a foundation under an existing house

I am thinking of purchasing a home built in the 40's. It's a "fixer upper" with the biggest issue being that this house was built with a post and beam foundation. I understand that a foundation can be installed under houses without lifting the house. The house will need a bit of leveling which I want to do during the foundation installation. Can you describe to me how a foundation is installed under a house without lifting the house? I have spoken with a person who said he had it done professionally and it was quite inexpensive ($3-5000) considering the project. The house is small (approx 1000 sq ft) with a rectangle footprint. I just want to be better informed from another source. Thank you.
