I just purchased a 2 storey, with no attic Dutch Colonial home with a one car attached garage. I want to add a second garage adjacent to the existing garage and open up the area into one large room for my work shop. The wall that I want to remove is 24 feet long and supports the second floor gable side of the house along with the main header (located 12 feet in the center of the house) that runs through the center of the home which supports the floor joists. The new shop will measure 22 feet widw and 24 feet deep. I do not want any columns in my way. What size beam will I need and what material will be best for this task, LVL, GluLam, Steel I Beam, 2x12 with a Flitch Plate and what Size will I Need???
