Re: Wall Framing 2x4 vs. 2x6From: info@builderswebsource.com CommentsWhen comparing 2x4 walls at 16" centers vs. 2x6 walls at 24" centers, the later is clearly more energy efficient. Furthermore, the deeper wall cavity of the 2x6 walls allow more insulation, such as R-19. This will give you a quieter house, and a warmer house in the winter...and cooler in the summer. However, 24" centers may not always be recommended, especially in seismic areas. In this case, sometimes 16" centers are used. The spacing of the studs should be dictated more by structural considerations, as the thermal considerations are less significant. If you're building a new home, and you can afford the extra width of the walls, we strongly recommend 2x6 construction whenever possible. It's true that you'll need wider window and door jambs, but this cost is minimal and most window and door companies provide ready-made options for 2x6 walls. Builders Websource.
