Are your balusters natural wood, or are they painted? If they're painted, you can use a high quality epoxy or resin-based wood filler to repair the damaged areas. Then sand to a smooth finish, prime and repaint. If they're natural wood, such as Oak, you may also be able to fill the damaged areas with a sandable and stainable wood putty (such as the type used for wood floors). For a do-it-yourselfer, this method is probably easier than trying to replace the balusters altogether. Finding an exact match may not be easy and you're creating unnecessary extra work. Epoxy fillers or wood putty can work like magic if you're diligent with each step. For more information on wood restoration using epoxy fillers, click HERE to see an earlier posting.
