You say that the existing span of your trusses are 36.8 inches. Did you mean feet? And when you say vaulted ceiling, are you assuming that the vault will go all the way to the ridge, or is it your intention to create a "scissors" truss, whereby the interior pitch is shallower than the roof pitch? Furthermore, what is your roofing material (tile, slate, shake, asphalt shingles, etc) and are there wind, snow or seismic loads for your region?. If so, what are the design parameters (check with your building department)? It may be possible to reinforce your existing trusses, but more information would be required before such an evaluation can be made. Please reply and we'll update our posting.
