Of course, it is possible to build a basement under an existing home with a crawlspace. However, the cost and disruption to your home will be significant. Installing a basement requires massive excavation and removal of soil. Sometimes high water tables present drainage-related problems. Once the soil has been removed and the house has been structurally reinforced, a new foundation is installed, typically with reinforced concrete. Waterproofing such a basement can be tricky, since access to the outside of the concrete wall may be limited, unless additional excavation is performed. Furthermore, you'll need to install drainage rock and a perimeter drainage system to collect and divert ground water away from the basement footing. The cost of the basement depends on the size, the location, and other structural considerations, such as siesmic reinforcement and so forth. Such a project may range from several tens of thousands of dollars to several hundred thousand dollars depending on the above factors. We recommend that you consult with a few general building contractors to get a sense of the local costs for such a project. Of course, only accurate cost estimates can be made from a well documented set of plans that include proper drainage, structural and civil engineering details. Builders Websource.
