The thickness of window stools varies greatly according to available space, as well as aesthetic/architectural considerations. Typical stools range from 11/16" thick to 1-1/8" or more. Most millwork shops offer a range of prefabricated stools with front details ranging from a simple bullnose, to more elaborate patterns. If you have a well known brand of window, you may be able to find an exact match from the manufacturer (such as Andersen, Pella, etc.). The wood can be anything you specify, but typically it is clear Pine, Poplar, or Oak. If it's to be painted, finger-jointed Pine is typical. Each stool is cut to fit on the job site, so always order a little extra in case you make a mistake or two. Builders Websource
