Re: Floor levelingFrom: info@builderswebsource.com Category: Carpentry and Framing Remote Name: 63.198.181.43 Date: 14 Dec 2002 Time: 09:48 PM
CommentsYour kitchen ceiling below the second story is sagging approximately 2 inches. The room size is 14 x 16. Such a large deflection is hard to imagine, and is probably indicative of a structure that does not meet current building codes. Probably the easiest way to level this is to bolt thick steel flitch plates to each ceiling joist. A flitch plate is a length of plate steel, typically 1/2" - 3/4" thick. The steel is cut to match the same dimensions of the ceiling/floor joists. Heavy-duty bolts anchor the joist to the steel. Of course, this would require removal of the drywall and may interfere with other wiring or plumbing overhead. Steel is much stiffer than wood and will add considerable strength to the floor above. Consult a licensed structural engineer to design a flitch plate with the right proportions, as well as bolting schedule. Builders Websource.
