structural info, I'd like to remove the wall between my kitchen and livingroom

I'm interesting in removing the walls and headers that separate my living, dining area and kitchen for an open floor plan. The house is a split-level built in approximately 1956. There is a basement below this area and it has two steel columns. There is a 17x18 foot bedroom above the area. Above that is an attic crawl space and the roof. Is it possible to create this open floor plan in my home? Is there a way to hide the headers and not use columns in this type of home?
