We hired a contractor to raise our home and put in a concrete basement. Instead of resorting to lally columns for structural support, we opted for steel beams. I just got a cost estimate for one of those beams and want to ensure the price we are being quoted is "fair". The beam is 12 inches deep and supports 56 lbs per sq. foot. Length of the house is about 30'. The price we were given for the beam alone is $900. Your inputs welcome!
