I an finishing a basement. I am considering removing a portion of a load bearing stud wall to open up a room. How do I figure what size/type of wood beam or number of posts to replace the wall? The basement is 35' long and 31' wide. The load bearing structures,i'm guessing, that span the width of the basement are located about every 11'. The joists are silent floor 16" o.c. with a single span rating of 19'7" and a multiple of 19'11". The wall I am looking at runs the full width of the basement and I would like to remove about 18' of it. The house is a 2 story over the basement. It is 3 yrs old located in the south.
