I have a finished basement in a new construction that we just moved into during October of 2002, just a week ago I noticed that around the sliding door in the basement, especially along the top of the sliding door, there is cracking around the door and frame and the door has pulled away from the door frame and there is a gap of about a quarter of an inch or more, the door is hard to open and the screen door is wedged tight and will not open at all. The builder has looked at it and stated that it was probally caused by the house settling, and that the extremely cold weather conditions may have also contributed to problem, (there were several days of cold weather with the temp in the teens during the day and single digits at night)the builder also said that he would need to wait until the weather became warmer before he could fix the door. I am concerned that this may be a larger problem than just settling of the home. I have not yet noticed any cracking of the foundation (poured walls) or cracks in the dry wall. Could this condition of the door pulling away from the frame be the result of settling of the home, with cold weather contributing to the problem or does this sound like a larger problem that I will need to have investigated
