Choosing a gas fireplace

Just moved into our new home and truly wish we had let the builder install a fireplace (propane is the only thing available in this area). House is heated by electric heat pump and I am never warm enough. Hoping that consecutive winters are nowhere near this cold, but, just in case........... Know there are both vented and ventless available, but don't know the pros and cons. This would be used as supplemental heat, something to take the chill out of the house, and as a back-up in case the electricity goes out. The house is two-story and approximately 2100 square feet. Any suggestions?
