Re: Can interior walls be removed?

Interior walls can be removed to open up a room. However, many interior walls are load-bearing partitions, meaning that they are carrying loads from the roof, a second story, or even just the ceiling joists themselves. Therefore, no attempt should be made to move any interior partitions until the structural aspects are fully understood. If the wall is load-bearing partition, beams can be installed to transfer the loads to other parts of the foundation. In some cases, foundation reinforcement may be required if the loads are significant. Anytime you contemplate moving any walls, whether internal or external, we advise you to hire a licensed structural engineer who can analyze the loads in your structure and determine whether additional structural reinforcements or beams may be necessary to safely transfer loads to the foundation.
