I'm in Michigan and the basement was dug in a clay subsoil that had caused water problems until I removed the flower beds and raised the grade and planted grass. The basement is finished and the floor is over a foot thick under the old post. I have three jacks I've been using replacing rotted support posts in other areas and some beams in the sizes you mention. Thanks for the prompt reply! I'll get to work this weekend on it.
