Garage Door Beam Replacement

The horizontal beam that spans my garage doorway is rotting from water damage. This beam looks to be at least 4" wide. I don't know how high it is. The 2x4 face board is also rotted. There is a 3rd beam on the inside, 2x8 that spans the 17'+ area. This beam is fine. I need to have this repaired ASAP. The question of the day. Is this something a homeowner can undertake? I'm envisioning bracing the entranceway with jacks or 2xs. Then cutting away the solid parts of the beams that are buried on either side of the entranceway. The dimensions of the garage are 21' deep by 20 1/2' wide by 10'8" high. The garage has its own small roof and has a crawl space above it. Nothing with any significant weight is stored up there. I can forward pictures of specific areas of the garage, if needed. Any help is appreciated. From the owner of the "Money Pit". Thanks, CJP cpennypa@yahoo.com
