LOUD noises coming from floor along back of home

Recently, a project to expand a parking lot has started behind our home say 35 feet. During the last 2 weeks, we have noticed LOUD creaking or banging noises coming from the first floor of our home along the backside of our house which faces out to where the parking lot is expanding to. First, any ideas on what could cause these HORRIBLE loud noises to come from our floors and second...Is there anyway the ground out back could be causing some unwanted settling in our foundation and basement...there is quite a drop-off from the land they shaved away to expand the lot. MUCH appreciated...Heidi
