Scuttle Hole for new build

Wanted to get some feedback or answers to the difficulty of relocating a scuttle hole for the attic/crawl space entry. We are currently having a home built with the original design (model home) having the scuttle hole entry to access the HVAC in the back patio. Well, apparantly, this is not to code, so the builder decided to place the opening in the great room. Not only is this an eyesore, but we've never seen an attic entry placed there. Usually it's placed in a closet or a hallway....somewhere less obtrusive. The builder seems to be refusing to move it anywhere else and they are saying the it's not a problem and some people don't mind having it there (but I feel that the majority of people wouldn't want this there). What can be done? If the builder won't change it, what would it cost to have this done after closing? I'm guessing that there isn't a clear path up in the crawl space and in order to do that, a lot of duct work may have to be moved.
